France's path towards sustainable nuclear power

Advice of the The National Academy of Technologies of France approved by the assembly on June 12, 2024 [Excerpt] The challenges of energy and climate change call for technological choices that require a long-term vision if they are to be fully overcome. This is particularly true in the field of nuclear energy. The scale and duration of the investments involved, as well as the mastery of the associated technologies and natural resources, require continuous action and stable strategic choices over many decades. This stability requires a detailed and shared explanation of the criteria that rationalise these choices for society. It is […]

Hydrogen: fundamentals and strategies in China and France/Europe for decarbonizing the economy

In this report, the National Academy of Technology of France and the Chinese Academy of Engineering jointly studied the potential role and uses of low-carbon hydrogen to reach the net-zero emission target of our economies. This report also analyses the whole value chain from production to end-use taking into account innovation, technological and economical aspects including safety issues. As the Chinese and European contexts differ, so are the roadmaps examined in this report. Access the report from the “Download” section   (Picture: ©Alexander Limbach – stock.adobe.com)

Advisory note from the National Academy of Technologies of France on the presence and activity of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater

Considering: – the COVID-19 pandemic linked to the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, – the very low number of published data on its presence in wastewater; information published by a research centre in the Netherlands (www.kwrwater.nl) [1], and based on data described as “preliminary”, mentions the presence of the virus genome in untreated wastewater, information taken up by the World Health Organisation [2]; – the recommendation of the National Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Sanitary Safety (Anses) [3] followed by the inter-ministerial circular [4] prohibiting the agricultural spreading of sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) which has not been proven to be […]

For a responsible and rational management of radioactive waste and materials

The Academy of Technology and the Academy of Sciences of France have published a stakeholder statement as part of the public debate on the national plan for the management of radioactive materials and waste. The laws of 1991 (regulating studies and research on the deep geological disposal of long-lived nuclear waste and establishing the National Assessment Commission (NAC)), 2006 (establishing the three-year revision of the National Plan for the Management of Radioactive Materials and Waste (PNGMDR)) and 2016 (specifying the procedures for the creation of a reversible deep geological disposal facility for long-lived high-level and intermediate level radioactive waste (HA and MAVL)) […]

Nuclear energy and the environment

This report on nuclear energy and the environment is jointly released by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Technologies of France and the French Academy of sciences. It is a second collaborative study of the three academies on nuclear energy matters. The first report, issued in August 2017, covered many aspects of nuclear energy and offered joint, mostly technical, recommendations for the direction of nuclear energy in the future. It was an attempt to provide an objective overview of many scientific and technological issues on nuclear energy (its position in the future energy mix, benefits, strengths and […]

Modifying thermal regulations for new buildings to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at least cost

Advice Note adopted by vote in Plenary session, July 5, 2017 In autumn 2016, in compliance with decisions taken at the COP21, France lodged with the UN headquarters the French nationally determined contributions (NDC) for the Climate. As of now, only GHG (greenhouse gas) emission reductions are compulsory. Strategies to improve energy efficiency and the development of renewable energy sources must therefore be subordinate to the NDCs, while taking into account the development of associate industrial sectors and their economic efficiency to limit GHG emissions at least cost. The future regulations for new buildings, so-called RBR 2018-2020 (1)  do not […]

Technology and climate change: several solutions to mitigate the effects and to adapt

The fight against the adverse effects of climate change has become a civilization issue, as much as is the objective to seek ‘peace on Earth’. Thus, measures to ensure reduced GHG emissions and to allow for preventive adaptations are necessary as of now. The areas concerned are numerous: agriculture and forests, energy, urbanism and transportation, industrial sectors, coast-line preservation, qualitative and quantitative supplies of drinking water, new manufacturing modes and shared economies, lean and adaptive management of Earth’s resources and their utilizations … It is primordial, henceforward, to shift to a more intense level the actions engaged to date and […]

Biodiversity and land-planning policies

Biodiversity and land-planning policies: local and global aspects, specifics and generalities Academic Advice Note adopted by vote in the NATF at its Dec.9, 2015 Plenary session The National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF) recommends that dynamic management policies in favour of biodiversity be included in land planning schemes. The Academic Advice Note approved by vote in the NATF’s December 2015 plenary session – resulting as it did from several years of investigations and debates carried out jointly with the Academy of Agriculture of France – recommends that all land planning schemes and projects include, as of the formal impact […]

Technology and climate change several solutions to mitigate the effects and to adapt

Advice Note adopted by vote by the National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF) in Plenary session, November 4, 2015 Ever since the National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF) was established [2000], it has dealt with the relationships – in its academic reports, advice notes and recommendations – between technology and the economic, social and environmental impacts due to the deployment of human activities. The COP21 conference is an important milestone is the framing of a global policy in the area of climate change, but certainly will not spell the end of a process that will continue for numerous […]

Methane (CH4): where it comes from and its impact on our climate

In a recently published Academic Report, the National Academy of Technologies of France (NATF) tentatively answers some questions arising from the observed, constant increase of methane released into the Earth’s atmosphere. How are the various geographic source locations identified? How does one measure the global increase of CH4 in the atmosphere? What criteria can be evoked to consider reducing these emissions? Should we prioritize and commit efforts to reduce CH4 or CO2 both of which contribute to man-made climate warming? Although methane gas (CH4) has a far lower concentration in the earth’s atmosphere than CO2, it is, to a large […]

Biotechnologies and the environment. Academic communication. Ed. Le Manuscrit : Avril 2010

Biotechnologies and the Environment A NATF Academic Communication. Ed. Le Manuscrit : April 2010 Biotechnologies rely on certain properties of micro-organisms, animal or vegetable cells, cell constituents, notably enzymes, in order to create new products, new production processes or new services. Biotechnologies are usually exclusively associated with GMBs and carry a generally negative connotation in France, even though their impact in the domain of public health is generally seen as positive. This vision stems largely from the fact that the benefits are not clearly understood and therefore are not “visible”. Faced with the difficulty of appreciating the risk factors and […]
